The beautiful Carmen, a worker in a cigarette factory, makes eyes at the soldier, Don José.
Soon after, Carmen is involved in an affray with a colleague from the factory. Don José is ordered to arrest her. But she does not remain in captivity for long , as the seductive factory worker is placed in his care and he allows her to escape. Soon after, she runs away from him laughing.
In the meantime, Carmen gets to know the famous matador , Escamillo, in a bar. He pays her a number of amorous, if unsuccessful, compliments. Carmen waits for Don José, who is due to be released from his one-month spell in prison for allowing her to escape. When Don José injures his superior officer with a dagger during a fight, he flees up into the mountain to join the smugglers.He has scarcely arrived before he meets Escamillo in the mountain hide-out. The matador has come for a rendez-vous with Carmen and this invokes a frenzy of jealousy in Don José. When everyone gathers in front of the arena in Seville for the bullfight to acclaim Escamillo, Carmen abruptly rejects the jealous Don José … and the ensuing struggle ends in death.
